MCBI is testing gene-expression analysis programs from both Silicon Genetics (GeNet/GeneSpring) and GeneData (Expressionist). As part of this project, MCBI is offering a database as a central repository for gene expression data for researchers around the state of Michigan. As the software trials progress, the central-database idea will be evaluated for effectiveness and ease of use.

A central database with full security features, administration, mirroring and archiving infrastructure in place could be an advantage to Michigan researchers. It can also be a convenient portal for Michigan’s researchers to publish their data to the rest of the world. As this database and networking architecture experiment proceeds, MCBI will learn the most effective ways for Michigan researchers to work with and share their gene-expression data.
